Rugs for Every Room: Bedroom, Dining, Study and Beyond

Every room has different demands — foot traffic, furniture, light, purpose. The right rug transforms a space. The wrong one fights it. Here is our room-by-room guide.

Bedroom

The bedroom is where comfort matters most. When you step out of bed, your feet should land on something warm and soft.

  • Best technique: Hand tufted (plush pile, sculptural texture) or handloom (smooth, warm)
  • Best materials: Wool for warmth, viscose for lustre, silk for pure luxury
  • Size: 8x10 ft under a queen bed, 9x12 ft under a king
  • Style tip: Neutral tones and soft patterns create calm. Save bold designs for public rooms.

Dining Room

A dining rug needs to be practical — chairs pulling in and out, food spills, heavy furniture.

  • Best technique: Flatweave or low-pile handloom
  • Best materials: Wool (naturally stain-resistant) or PET yarn (washable)
  • Size: At least 60 cm beyond the table on all sides — chairs must stay on the rug when pulled out
  • Style tip: A bold geometric or patterned rug hides stains better than a solid light colour.

Study and Library

A study rug should feel warm and grounding without being distracting.

  • Best technique: Hand knotted (dense, formal) or handloom (understated)
  • Best materials: Wool — warm underfoot, absorbs sound, ages with character
  • Style tip: Rich, deep tones — burgundy, navy, forest green — create a contemplative atmosphere. Traditional patterns suit libraries well.

Hallways and Corridors

Runners need to withstand heavy foot traffic and sit flat under doors.

  • Best technique: Flatweave (thin, no tripping hazard)
  • Best materials: Wool or jute — tough and forgiving
  • Size: 30 cm shorter than the hallway at each end

Children's Room

Safety, softness and cleanability are the priorities.

  • Best technique: Handloom or flatweave
  • Best materials: Wool (naturally non-toxic, fire-resistant) or PET yarn (stain-proof, washable)
  • Style tip: Choose a rug that can handle play. Save the silk for the master bedroom.

Home Office

An office rug defines your workspace and reduces fatigue from standing or sitting all day.

  • Best technique: Low-pile handloom or flatweave (office chairs roll easily)
  • Best materials: Wool — absorbs sound, reduces echo in video calls
  • Style tip: Geometric or minimalist patterns support focus. Avoid visually busy designs.
