India's Original Floor Covering, Refined
The dhurrie is arguably India's most democratic textile. Woven flat on simple looms for centuries — in homes, in courtyards, in village squares — it was the everyday rug before the word carried any connotation of luxury. At House of Rugs, we work with that democratic spirit but elevate the materials, patterns, and finishing to a standard that belongs in seriously designed interiors.
Construction and Character
Flatweave rugs have no pile. Weft threads are passed over and under taut warp threads in a tight interlocking weave, producing a thin, reversible textile with crisp pattern definition on both sides. This makes dhurrie rugs inherently practical: they lie flat without a pad, they are easy to fold and store, and they suit high-traffic areas where a thick pile would quickly show wear.
Our Approach
We weave in pure cotton, wool, and cotton-wool blends. Cotton dhurries are light, washable, and cool underfoot — ideal for Indian summers and informal rooms. Wool flatweaves add warmth and a denser hand, better suited to living rooms and bedrooms in cooler climates. Every piece is woven by hand on pit looms by our artisan cooperative.
Layer a flatweave rug under a dining table where spills are inevitable. Use dhurrie rugs in children's rooms, on covered verandahs, or as a base layer beneath a smaller knotted piece. Their thin profile makes them practical where doors swing close to the floor.
