Rug Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Size for Every Room

The most common mistake when buying a rug is choosing one that is too small. A well-sized rug anchors a room, defines zones, and makes furniture feel intentional. Here is how to get it right.

The Universal Rule

Leave 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 inches) of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the walls. This creates a natural frame that makes the room feel larger and the rug more intentional.

Living Room

Your living room rug should be large enough that the front legs of all seating — sofa, armchairs — sit on the rug. This visually ties the furniture together into a cohesive group.

  • Small living room (3x3.5m): 5x8 ft rug
  • Medium living room (4x5m): 6x9 ft or 8x10 ft rug
  • Large living room (5x6m+): 9x12 ft or larger

Tip: If all furniture legs cannot fit on the rug, ensure at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs are on it. A floating rug with no furniture touching it looks lost.

Dining Room

The dining rug must be large enough that chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. Allow at least 60 cm (24 inches) beyond the table edge on all sides.

  • 4-seater table: 6x9 ft minimum
  • 6-seater table: 8x10 ft
  • 8-seater table: 9x12 ft

Tip: Choose a flatweave or low-pile rug for dining areas — chairs slide more easily and crumbs are simpler to clean.

Bedroom

The rug should extend at least 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24 inches) beyond the sides and foot of the bed. When you step out of bed, your feet should land on the rug.

  • Queen bed: 8x10 ft rug placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed
  • King bed: 9x12 ft rug
  • Alternative: Two small runners (2.5x8 ft) on either side of the bed

Hallways and Corridors

Runner rugs should be 30 cm shorter than the hallway on each end, leaving space before doorways and turns.

  • Standard hallway: 2.5x8 ft or 2.5x10 ft runner
  • Wide hallway: 3x10 ft or 3x12 ft runner

Entryway

A 3x5 ft or 4x6 ft rug works well for most entryways. Choose a durable flatweave or handloom — this is a high-traffic zone.

How to Measure

  1. Use painter's tape or newspaper to mark the rug outline on the floor
  2. Live with it for a day — walk around it, place furniture against it
  3. If it feels small, go one size up. When in doubt, always size up
