Buying Rugs Online in India: What to Know Before You Order

Buying a rug online can feel like a leap of faith — you cannot touch the texture, stand on it, or see how it sits in your room. But with the right approach, buying online gives you access to a far wider selection than any physical showroom, often at better prices.

What to Check Before Ordering

1. Is It Actually Handmade?

Many online sellers use words like "artisan-inspired" or "hand-finished" to imply handmade quality while selling machine made products. Look for specific technique descriptions: hand knotted, hand tufted, handloom, flatweave. A genuine handmade rug brand will tell you exactly how and where the rug was made.

2. What Material Is It?

The listing should clearly state the fibre content — wool, silk, viscose, cotton, jute. Beware of vague terms like "soft fibre" or "luxury material" without specifics. If the material is not stated, it is likely synthetic.

3. Who Made It?

The best rug brands are transparent about their makers. Are they a manufacturer or a reseller? A brand that makes its own rugs has direct quality control. A marketplace listing that ships from a third party gives you no such guarantee.

4. What Size Do You Need?

The most common online rug mistake is ordering too small. Use painter's tape on the floor to mark the dimensions before ordering. When in doubt, go one size up.

5. What Is the Return Policy?

Handmade rugs should come with a clear return or exchange policy. Colours can look different on screen versus in your room — a good brand accounts for this.

When you buy from a marketplace or reseller, you are paying for middlemen. When you buy directly from the maker, you get:

  • Better prices — no distributor markup
  • Customisation — made-to-order sizes, colours and materials
  • Provenance — you know exactly where your rug was made and by whom
  • After-sale support — direct communication with the people who made your rug
