Rug Size Guide: How to Choose the Perfect Rug Size for Every Room

There is one mistake that appears in beautifully decorated homes far more often than any other: a rug that is too small. Getting the size right is the single most impactful decision you will make — more than colour, pattern, or technique. This guide covers every room with specific dimensions and placement rules.

The One Rule That Applies Everywhere

Larger is almost always better. When in doubt between two sizes, choose the larger one. Always aim to leave a 30–45 cm border of bare floor visible around the rug's edges.

Living Room

At minimum, the front legs of every sofa and chair should sit on the rug. Ideally all four legs.

Room Size Rug Size
Small (up to 3.5 x 4.5m) 160 x 230 cm
Medium (up to 4.5 x 5.5m) 200 x 290 cm or 240 x 300 cm
Large (5.5m+) 270 x 360 cm or custom

Bedroom

Under a King Bed

A 270 x 360 cm rug extending at least 60 cm beyond sides and foot.

Under a Queen Bed

A 240 x 300 cm rug, or 200 x 290 cm for tighter rooms.

Beside the Bed

Two runners (75 x 200 cm) on either side works beautifully in narrow rooms.

Dining Room

Your dining rug must extend at least 60 cm past the table on all sides so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

Table Min Rug Size
4-seat 210 x 270 cm
6-seat 240 x 320 cm

Hallways and Runners

Leave 10-15 cm of bare floor on each side. Width: 60-90 cm. Length: measure hall and subtract 30 cm at each end.

Custom Sizing at House of Rugs

Standard sizes are a starting point. Every rug in our collection is available in custom dimensions — because your room has its own proportions. We have been working with homeowners, architects, and designers since 1951. Get sizing advice →

Measure before you buy — always

The most common reason a rug looks wrong after it arrives is that the buyer measured the furniture but not the rug’s placement relative to the room. Before ordering, put painter’s tape on the floor where the rug’s edges will sit. Live with the tape for a day — walk around it, sit on the sofa, look at it from the entrance. If the tape outline looks small, the rug will too.

Indian room sizes require custom more often than you’d think

Most rug size charts published online are written for Western rooms. Indian living rooms, particularly in older apartments, have unusual proportions — long and narrow, or with a dining area opening directly into the living space. In these rooms, standard 6×9 or 8×10 sizes often look stranded. If your room is longer than about 16 feet, or has an awkward L-shape, a custom-sized rug is almost always the right choice.

Frequently asked questions

What size rug for a 3-seater sofa?

For a standard 3-seater (approximately 80 inches), an 8×10 ft rug lets you put the front legs of the sofa on the rug with room to spare for side tables. A 9×12 ft rug allows all four legs on.

Can I use a round rug in a living room?

Yes — round rugs work particularly well under round dining tables, in entryways, and in square-shaped sitting nooks. Avoid round rugs for rectangular living rooms where the geometry fights the space.

What if my room is irregularly shaped?

Use the largest seating group as your anchor and size the rug to that, leaving 18–24 inches of floor around it. If two seating groups exist, consider two rugs rather than one oversized piece.
