Handmade in Bhadohi — Where Every Rug Begins
Bhadohi, in eastern Uttar Pradesh, has been the heartbeat of Indian carpet weaving for over two centuries. Known globally as the Carpet Capital of India, this small district produces more handmade rugs than almost anywhere else on earth.
House of Rugs is rooted here. Our workshops sit in the same region where our great-grandfather first learned the craft in 1951. Four generations later, we still work with the same communities of weavers — many of them women — who have carried this tradition forward through their families.
Why Bhadohi Rugs Are Different
The Bhadohi carpet belt — stretching across Bhadohi, Mirzapur and parts of Varanasi — is home to a concentration of weaving skill found nowhere else. The artisans here specialise in techniques passed down through generations:
- Hand Knotting — The oldest and most revered technique. A single 5×8 ft hand knotted rug can take 4 to 8 months to complete, with hundreds of thousands of individual knots tied by hand.
- Hand Tufting — A faster technique that allows for sculptural, three-dimensional textures. Our hand tufted rugs use a tufting gun guided entirely by the artisan's hand — no automation.
- Handloom Weaving — Woven on vertical looms with a rhythmic, meditative process. The resulting rugs carry a subtle texture that machines cannot replicate.
- Flatweave & Dhurrie — India's most democratic textile. Lightweight, reversible, and endlessly versatile.
Our Materials
We source the finest natural fibres for our rugs:
- New Zealand Wool — The gold standard. Exceptionally soft, naturally stain-resistant, with a beautiful lustre.
- Indian Wool — Hardy and resilient. Ideal for high-traffic areas and everyday luxury.
- Silk & Jasmine Silk — For rugs that shimmer. Our silk pieces are investment-grade works of art.
- Bamboo Silk — A sustainable alternative with a gorgeous sheen.
- Sari Silk & Jute — Upcycled Indian textiles woven into one-of-a-kind statement pieces.
- Viscose — A silk-like lustre at an accessible price point.
Women Artisans at the Centre
A significant portion of the weavers we work with are women. In the Bhadohi carpet belt, rug weaving has long been a source of economic independence for women in rural communities. We are proud that our rugs carry not just beauty, but the dignity of skilled, fairly compensated labour.
